How Under The Elder Tree came to be
When the Universe has a plan to unfold, it does whatever it must to make it happen.
Under The Elder Tree opened it’s doors in the Spring of 2014, but this Tree’s seed had been planted many many years before.
I’m Carrie Eller, Owner of Under The Elder Tree. When I was a child, I loved to spend time at my Grandmother Barbara’s house. She was a collector of knowledge and loved sharing it all with me. I’m a voracious reader, so I would spend hours upon hours going through her bookshelves. She was such an open minded, independent woman and her collection reflected this. I devoured books on Herbalism, Eastern Philosophy, Woman’s Health, Native Flora & Fauna, Folk Medicine, and other odd and mind expanding subjects. She was also a bit of a hypochondriac, so a good many of her books were health and medically based. While sitting on my Father’s Mother’s floor at a very young age, the seed was planted.
Fast forward some years later, my brother, Chad, whom was also influenced by my Grandmother’s books, started herb collecting. He was such a naturalist and spent every waking hour in the woods identifying and collecting plants. I can distinctly remember the pungent smell of Sassafras tea bubbling on the kitchen stove. He eventually became so proficient at plant identification that he started hunting and harvesting wild Ginseng for a profit as a teenager. While I too spent a good bit of time in the woods, it was usually with a book in hand and my nose buried in it.
What he would bring home, I would then look up and figure out it’s usages. I had no inkling of actually doing anything special with my knowledge, I just had the compulsive need to acquire it and squirrel it away in my brain somewhere.
The seed was being nurtured.
As I grew a bit older, I floundered in College. I didn’t have a real direction I wanted to go in, and truth be told, I put more effort into having a good time, rather than my required studies. As a result, at 21, I had my eldest son, Liam. I strongly felt it was important to be home with him while he was young, so I put my education on hold until he himself was ready to start school. During my time home, I still continued to endlessly consume books on every subject that piqued my interest. Thankfully, the Paradox bookstore, right here in Centre Market, could keep me endlessly stocked with stacks of cheap books to keep this reading junkie satisfied.
When my son was about 4, I had some major health issues that landed me in the hospital. I was young and had no insurance. So out of necessity, I had to figure out how to heal my own self. This is where all my collection of knowledge was first tested. I applied my knowledge and rebuilt my body the way it needed. My formulation was so effective for me that it’s still the basis of the Liver Tea that is one of the best sellers in the shop to this day. This was my first realization of the true power of my self education. But, at this age, I never thought beyond applying this information to anything but my own health concerns.
It was creeping up on time for kindergarten registration. I was in a bit of a panic because I still hadn’t figured out what I wanted to go back to school for. Nothing offered locally really seemed like something I wanted to do for the rest of my life. For Christmas that year, someone scheduled me a spa package. I never had been to a spa before, so I was a bit apprehensive at what to expect. I had a pedicure and massage set up, and truthfully I was scared to death to have a stranger touch my undressed body. I nearly cancelled I was so nervous about it. But I went. Literally 10 minutes into my massage session, I had an Epiphany- I knew without a doubt what I was supposed to be doing in life! I was so sure of this fact, that within 2 weeks of that massage, I was enrolled in Massage Therapy school. It was the best feeling in the world to have such a concrete direction of my life path.
I started school in 2001 and finished my 900 hours of schooling and started practicing. I've built my skills up over the years in numerous different settings- everywhere from high end spas to mom & pop salons, wellness businesses, contracting in professional athletic venues, to providing medical therapy in a Chiropractic office. Each locale provided me with more varied skills to add to my professional tool belt to better serve you. And while I practiced, all the continuing education I was required to have, I took as many alternative health and healing courses I could find. It’s a subject I love so much. Again, not really thinking I would really get to apply my knowledge in Wheeling.
(Side note- my other 2 children, Maddox & Samara, want me to make sure I mention them too. They both arrived between 3-6 years after starting my Massage Career. Many of you have seem them around the shop. And Samara has become quite the shop helper! I hope to instill a love for healing in her with the hopes that she follows in my footsteps and keeps the Tree of Healing alive and well for many years to come.)
When I was ready to set up shop on my own, I chose a name that already had a significant meaning in my life. My last name, Eller is German. And in German, it means, “Under The Elder Tree”. And in Spring of 2014, The Elder Tree shot up. I was just planning for it to be Massage Therapy business, and offer a few natural relaxation selections for my clients to purchase if wanted. But everyone who walked in my door saw my few herbs and asked if I had any for each of their various complaints. So, each time, I said, that I could order it in. I had the knowledge and education, so why not? So Under The Elder Tree has grown completely by the request of the people of the Valley. You ask for it, I get it! Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought this is what I would be doing in life. But the Universe knew and was guiding me every step of the way. Looking back, I can totally see exactly how every event in my life was like a pin ball machine lever propelling me in the direction of where I’m at today.
Three years after opening, I was bursting at the seams and needed to branch out even more. I gave as much as I could in my little inception space and had no choice but to expand. So to Centre Market I went. And, Oh My! - what an expansion it has been! With this new space, I’ve brought in 5 new healing practitioners, and expanded my retail health and wellness options significantly. And still you want more! So I am brainstorming endlessly on how to make things better and how to give you all what you are wanting and needing to help you on your personal Health & Wellness journey.
Under The Elder Tree is growing and thriving and branching out in so many ways. It’s a living organism that has been nurtured and fertilized by the support the people of Wheeling and the surrounding Ohio Valley. I feel so honored and humbled to be doing what I am called to do, and cultivating a space where others can answer their own healing calling as well.
